Stop and Smell the Grapes

It’s a long story for perhaps another editorial, but I have occasion to be out of town for a more extended amount of time than planned these days....a place that’s beautiful in its own right, but one that’s notably absent of something special. It’s the thing that makes our Septembers always smell the best. It is also the thing that makes Chautauqua County truly feel like home each fall: Grapes!

We are, of course, the second largest grape-growing region in the country and the oldest Concord grape growers in the world! The Lake Erie Wine Country spans more than 50 beautiful lakeside miles and features more than 20 wineries. Our extensive network of vineyards, passed down through generations of dedicated growers, play a lead role on the national stage of juicers and jams — not to mention help to support a complementary stronghold of charming communities like Ripley, Westfield, Brocton, Fredonia and Silver Creek and thriving small businesses.

It’s this strength and heritage that reminds us we will endure despite the current trying times for our local grape farmers. A grateful community encourages and stands behind them. We are especially proud to celebrate grape growers’ hard work and harvest this fall.

While I may not be here to enjoy the grapes this season, I hope you all take a moment and, to coin a familiar phrase with a twist, stop and smell the grapes... and thank a farmer!
