I often speak of my love for our local libraries. I work from home, so when the dishes pile and my rural internet fails, I head to my nearest refuge, the Bemus Point Library. Shannon Donovan, no doubt one of the world’s most dedicated library directors, greets me with a knowing smile every single time. We joke because I always say, “I’m going to be quick today, Shannon” and I never, ever am.
I’d like to pretend that I’m there eagerly borrowing a regular supply of books — as any lifelong learner should — but my brain is all filled up on newspapers, kids and constant crazy — and so I hop on my favorite computer, in my favorite chair, with my favorite, familiar surroundings, and I type away per usual.
Like our two cover story writers in this edition who well-describe the multi-faceted value of our local libraries, for me, I relish in the quiet, high-quality workspace. But perhaps even more so, I enjoy the steady flow of welcome distractions. The busy library-goers well-represent my little village and remind me as to why I love my library beyond all the beautiful books. Located in the heart of Bemus Point — much like many of our 24 other local libraries — it’s my community connection and the pulse of our place.
There’s the friendly summer tourist gratefully taking advantage of the air condition, bathroom facilities and asking for ice cream shop directions. There’s the local volunteers bustling around the admin space planning for the next fundraiser. There’s the book club or crafters heading to the back room for the event of the day. And there’s especially the plethora of noisy children and diligent parents fondly taking me back to my sons’ story hour days of now almost two decades ago.
Libraries are the heart and soul of our community in ways uniquely special to us all. This summer, settle in and “unearth” your own story at one of our many hardworking local libraries.
We wish to also take this opportunity to thank the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System for their partnership that allows us to feature the “CHQ Reads” library corner in the first Monday edition of each month. We are proud and grateful for their recognition of this effective showcase and hope any additional library that might wish to be included will contact us soon. Kudos to LJ Martin, library system marketing guru, for taking the lead in organizing this meaningful effort.
