Summer Has Only Just Begun

Last week I was with a friend who announced: “I can’t believe summer is almost over!” to which I appallingly replied “Bite your tongue. We are only at the mid-point!”
But in the back of my mind, I shared that same angst. I’m not looking forward to the cooler temps and my impending 50th birthday this fall (gulp, ugh!). I’m not looking forward to the slowdown in festivals and fun. And I’m especially not looking forward to saying goodbye to the three of my four sons who are heading back to school.
I could continue down the road with this depressing bent: It’s likely one of my last summers with all four of my growing sons at home, and I might lament about how I may have spent more time doing their laundry and dishes than out with all four of them having fun. Or maybe more money on their gas and groceries than investing in local outings as a family. And I could note how my cheery quests for quality time coming out of Memorial Day have possibly turned a bit more like a desperate negotiation for a tiny piece of their busy calendars.
I could wallow and keep complaining…
Or I could go back to the retort I made to my friend. Summer’s not over. An amazing August has just begun and here is our chance to embrace it and run.
So launch into August with an attitude adjustment (if needed, like me). Get those kids together (come hell or highwater, mama!). Don’t be sad “it’s almost over”; nope, love every minute that’s just begun. Make August your most memorable month yet.
